Working together for bigger impact We are really excited to share some big news. The Fortus...
A community in action: our very first volunteer day
Building more than just a foundation
When we launched the Fortus Foundation in 2024, we knew we wanted to do more than provide funding. Cutting down on red tape with simpler grant applications and reports was a good start, but our real ambition was bigger. We wanted to spark a ripple effect - a community that looks out for its community. A donation that becomes action, and action that creates lasting change.
This summer, less than a year after we got started, we saw that vision come to life.
How it all began
It started with a call from one of our brilliant 1%ers, Kevin Widdrington at Hindle Controls Limited. Kevin had noticed that the local cemetery had become so overgrown that families were struggling to visit their loved ones. After speaking with Fulford Parish Council, we learned that while a long-term fix was in the works, the immediate need was still there.
And this was exactly the kind of moment we had been waiting for.
So, we rolled up our sleeves and got moving.
A true community effort
With just a few conversations, something amazing happened. Local businesses, community groups, and volunteers came together for our very first Day of Action.
Armed with mowers, strimmers, rakes, and buckets of energy, teams of volunteers worked side by side to bring the cemetery back to life. By the end of the day, more than a thousand plots were accessible again - giving families the chance to spend time with their loved ones in dignity and peace.
But it wasn’t just about the work. It was about the kindness. Businesses stepped in without hesitation. Local favourite, and fellow 1%er, Clucking Oinks not only joined the effort but also made sure no volunteer went hungry, generously providing food free of charge. Everywhere you looked, there was generosity, connection, and a shared sense of purpose.
What it really means
Yes, the Fortus Foundation is a grant-giving charity, powered by Yorkshire businesses and supporting local organisations. But this day proved it is becoming much more than that. Together, we are building a collective force for good - ready to show up, get stuck in, and make a difference wherever it’s needed most.
And this was only the beginning. Our first Day of Action will not be our last.
